Genomics
At BBG, as the world leader of Belgian Blue genetics, with our unique specialization of “Beef-on-Dairy”, we strongly believe in R&D to make progresswith this breed.
In 2016, we concluded a research agreement with the GGMN (Genetics, Genomics and numerical modelling group) from the Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech of the University of Liège (Belgium). The GGMN is directed by Nicolas Gengler, internationaly reknown Professor who was awarded the JL Lush Award in animal breeding by the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) in 2019. This prize is awarded for outstanding research in the field of animal breeding.
Since 2021, BBG has been offering genomics for Belgian Blue in both purebred and crossbred varieties, which represents a revolution in this breed.
Genomics in crossbreeding :
Data on easy calving are collected in purebred Holstein, purebred Belgian Blue and thousands of crossbred calves. BBG collects data in Belgium and uses indexes in France and in the Netherlands. This method provides highly reliable genomic figures for calving ease..
!New!
BBG now provides genomic indexes for the value of crossbred calves at the age of 2 weeks, considered as the average age for sale in most parts of Europe.
Genomic evaluation does not substitute to a polygenic evaluation of a bull, but significantly improves its precision and enables earlier detection of animals with high genetic potential.
